Robben Island

Nowadays Robben Island is a nature reserve with a large amount of animal species – especially birds. But the Island rose to fame due to its former prison.

In the 7th century the Island was used as a penal colony, and as to all the seals, the Dutchmen were naming it "Robbe Eiland". In the 1960-ies political prisoners were taken into custody by the Apartheid Government. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island for 27 years.

So visitors should not let the chance pass to take a look at the prison including the limepit in which the prisoners were forced to work for six hours every day.

Boat trips from Cape Town to the 12 km-far Robben Island take place every hour.
